Central banks bought gold at their fastest pace since the end of 2024 during the third quarter, according to a World Gold Council report released Tuesday. The purchases came as the metal faced pressure from higher oil prices and interest rates.

The institutions accumulated a net 321 tons in the three months through September. That lifted estimated central bank buying for 2026 to 675 tons after a slow start to the year, slightly ahead of the total recorded over the same period a year earlier.
