Cenovus Energy exceeded analyst forecasts in the third quarter of 2026, reporting adjusted earnings of $1.83 per share against an estimate of $1.55 and revenue of $19.14 billion compared with expectations of $16.57 billion. The Canadian producer said operating margin and adjusted funds flow both reached quarterly records, while net debt declined by CAD 2.4 billion from the previous quarter to CAD 3 billion.
Operating margin totalled CAD 6.3 billion and adjusted funds flow reached CAD 5 billion. Upstream production rose by more than 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from the second quarter to nearly 1.025 million BOE per day, exceeding the 1 million mark for the first time. Oil sands output topped 830,000 barrels per day for a third consecutive quarterly record.
Cenovus said oil sands unit operating costs fell to CAD 7.80 per barrel, nearly CAD 0.50 lower than in the previous quarter. The company attributed its lower per-barrel costs in part to increased production using largely the same infrastructure, as well as its focus on cost control.
Downstream operations also delivered strong results. The company reported about CAD 1.8 billion in downstream operating margin, nearly twice the prior quarter’s figure. Canadian refining contributed around CAD 420 million, while U.S. refining generated approximately CAD 1.4 billion. Cenovus said high benchmark cracks, refinery utilization and commercial execution supported the performance.
The company returned CAD 1.9 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including CAD 1.5 billion in share repurchases and CAD 403 million in dividends. Cenovus said its lower debt gives it greater flexibility for shareholder returns and investment.
Cenovus expects full-year 2026 production to exceed 1 million BOE per day, near the high end of its previous guidance range of 970,000 to 1.01 million BOE per day. It expects capital spending to be at or slightly above the top of its CAD 5 billion to CAD 5.3 billion range, citing longer capitalization at West White Rose, foreign-exchange effects in downstream operations and somewhat higher growth spending in the second half of the year.
Among its development projects, Christina Lake North is expected to reach an exit rate of about 125,000 barrels per day by the end of 2026. Cenovus said drilling of the first West White Rose production well is complete, with completion and tie-in work underway and first oil expected soon. The project is expected to ramp toward about 80,000 barrels per day gross by 2028 or 2029. The Spruce Lake DilSAP project is expected to add around 10,000 barrels per day when it comes online in 2028.
Cenovus shares were little changed in premarket trading at $43.03, up 0.19% from the previous close. Executives noted that the quarter benefited from unusually strong refining conditions, while also citing wider heavy-oil differentials, potential inflation and the need to deliver projects and maintenance work as planned.
