The United States carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, a US official said. The official described the action as limited and said it did not mark a resumption of major combat operations. They spoke anonymously.

A second US official said the strikes were defensive measures against Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against US assets. Fox News, citing officials, separately reported that the action followed Iranian fire at a US aircraft.

Iranian state media outlet IRNA reported several explosions on Qeshm Island earlier on Monday. The Pentagon referred questions to US Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East; CENTCOM did not respond to requests for comment.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the strike was the latest in a series of US attacks in recent weeks. President Donald Trump had suggested that attacks on Iran could resume after Tuesday’s US midterm elections, but comments he made after a speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday indicated he might be reconsidering.
