Amgen’s push to compete in the obesity-drug market began with genetic research in Iceland, according to Bloomberg’s Madison Muller.
The research originated in a basement at the University of Iceland Science Park in Reykjavík, where biological samples were stored in a freezer kept at minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Icelandic DNA data form part of Amgen’s strategy as it searches for a treatment capable of challenging the leading drugs in the obesity market, including Ozempic. Bloomberg describes the Icelandic research as central to the company’s hopes of finding its next major opportunity in the sector.
