OpenAI has appointed former US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll to a newly created position focused on national security modernization, the company said on Monday. He will serve as senior counselor, advising the leadership team and collaborating with outside partners on potential applications of advanced AI in national security and cybersecurity.
Driscoll will also work with government officials, industry leaders and academic institutions on practical initiatives for developing what OpenAI calls “democratic AI.” The company said he will help its teams understand the operational needs of national security organizations around the world.
“I’m joining OpenAI to help the United States and our allies put this technology to work responsibly, for the people who keep us safe,” Driscoll said in a statement.
Driscoll resigned from his Army post earlier this year after months of tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He also took part in talks with Moscow and Kyiv aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, after being selected for the diplomatic role by US President Donald Trump.
