India has approved changes to its short-term military recruitment plan, extending recruits’ tenure and offering them a path to permanent employment. The changes come as tensions along the country’s borders with China and Pakistan continue to pressure its defense establishment.
The revisions partially roll back a contentious element of the Agnipath program, which replaced much of the traditional recruitment system with four-year contracts. Under the existing arrangement, only a quarter of each intake batch were selected to remain in service.
