Hydro-Québec has extended the timeline for its C$200 billion (US$143 billion) investment plan by six years, to 2041. The state-owned utility says it may be a net importer of electricity in the meantime, despite its major export contracts with US utilities.

The plan, launched in 2023, was originally intended to expand power generation and improve transmission reliability by 2035. It aimed to address an energy shortfall, meet rising demand associated with the electric-vehicle industry and support the utility’s electricity export commitments to the United States.
