France is preparing for a day of strikes and demonstrations over the cost of living, extending a wave of protests that has lasted more than a month. The mobilization comes as parliamentary talks on next year’s budget remain at an impasse.

The country’s main public- and private-sector unions have called for nationwide action, uniting protesters with different grievances. They include members of the grassroots Yellow Vest movement, which emerged in 2018, and students who have protested since September over overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages and deteriorating school buildings.
