Stand-up comedy is booming in China and is now the country’s second-largest theater category after cinema, according to state media.
American comedian Des Bishop is among those credited with helping spark the trend more than a decade ago. After moving to Beijing, he learned Mandarin from scratch and developed a stand-up routine that helped lay the groundwork for the comedy scene.
Bloomberg’s Stephen Engle met Bishop in Hong Kong to discuss how the industry has evolved and the issue of censorship.
