Residents in dozens of US counties and cities will soon have the opportunity to vote on policies that could limit the expansion of data centers. The measures are appearing on ballots in municipalities ranging from Nevada to Georgia.
The proposals could take several forms, including new taxes, tighter regulation or outright bans on artificial intelligence infrastructure. If approved, they could slow development of facilities used to support AI and other computing services.
The votes may put hundreds of billions of dollars in planned investment at stake and create challenges for major technology companies and data center developers. Among those potentially affected are hyperscalers such as Meta Platforms Inc. and developers including Applied Digital Corp.
