Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing a growing wave of court challenges over his government’s decision to accelerate a proposed oil pipeline from Alberta to Canada’s west coast.

Nine Indigenous groups have asked a judge to review and overturn the Canadian government’s Oct. 1 order designating the crude oil pipeline as a “project of national interest.” The designation was made under a legal mechanism created by Carney’s government to speed up the construction of major infrastructure projects.

The lawsuits challenge the government’s use of that mechanism to fast-track the pipeline’s development.
