Cadence Design Systems shares fell 4.1% in morning trading after The Information reported that Anthropic is presenting its Claude AI model’s chip-design capabilities to investors ahead of its IPO. The report said Anthropic’s 15-person hardware team is using the model to speed up custom silicon engineering workflows compared with traditional design processes at companies such as Nvidia and AMD.
The news raised concerns that AI companies could rely less on established electronic design automation (EDA) platforms, a core part of Cadence’s business. Peer Synopsys also came under pressure, while the Nasdaq was higher, suggesting the weakness was concentrated in EDA stocks rather than reflecting a broader market decline.
Valuation concerns added to the selling. A discounted cash flow analysis published the same day estimated that Cadence trades at a significant premium to its model-based intrinsic value, potentially leaving the stock more exposed to concerns about disruption. Needham raised its price target to $430 from $400 and kept a Buy rating, but the move did not offset investor anxiety.
The concerns echo a similar episode in July 2026, when Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 model demonstrated autonomous chip design using open-source tools, prompting a comparable decline in Cadence and Synopsys shares. The latest drop comes despite Cadence reporting 22% revenue growth and a record $8.2 billion backlog the previous week. Its shares are also below their 52-week high of $416.69.
