Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said Prime Minister Mark Carney’s fiscal plans are not currently complicating the central bank’s efforts to bring inflation under control.
Speaking to lawmakers on Tuesday, Macklem said he would weigh in on fiscal policy if government finances became unsustainable and created spillovers in markets, or if fiscal and monetary policies worked against each other in a way that made it harder to return inflation to the Bank’s 2% target.
